Here, you’ll discover the foods that cause gout. But the gout foods to avoid are, unfortunately, very popular. Nevertheless, a gout treatment diet is needed in order for you to eliminate your gout.

Generally speaking, foods that cause gout contain high concentrations of purines. These are natural chemical compounds in your body cells and in your food, which produce uric acid as they metabolize.

But, as you probably know by now, it’s the high levels of uric acid that lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in your joints, and, these cause your gout symptoms. So, as a gout sufferer, you need to reduce the high uric acid in your blood.

And since the purines in your food are a great contributor to the continual production of uric acid, you need to identify which foods are particularly high in purines, and, avoid them in your gout diet.

In general, these come under the headings of red meat, seafood, poultry and legumes. But, there are varying levels of purines across the foods withing these headings.

So the following foods should be eliminated completely from your gout diet:-

  • anchovies
  • sardines
  • shrimps
  • consomme
  • bouillon
  • gravy
  • broth
  • roe
  • mackerel
  • herrings
  • scallops
  • mussels
  • mincemeat
  • meat extracts
  • liver
  • heart
  • brains
  • kidneys
  • sweetbreads
  • dried legumes
  • baker’s yeast
  • brewer’s yeast
  • yeast extracts
  • soy

But be careful not to change your diet too quickly, as a rapid change can actually help RAISE uric acid levels and trigger gout. You can get more information here.

Gout Diets: 20 Foods That Cause Gout

A good diet for gout is based on foods that have relatively low concentrations of natural chemical compounds called ‘purines’ in them. This is because purines in your body and food produce uric acid after they breakdown following the chemical process that provides you with your protein and energy needs, among other things.

And since high uric acid levels in the blood lead to gout-causing deposits of uric acid crystals in your joints and surrounding tissue, it makes sense for a gout sufferer to change to a low-purine diet. This means cutting out the high-purine foods that cause gout.

There are many foods that have high, or, very high purine levels in them. For the most part high-purine foods are also high-protein foods. Here are 20 very high purine foods that cause gout that you should avoid completely:-

  1. anchovies
  2. mackerel
  3. herring
  4. sardines
  5. mussels
  6. scallops
  7. shrimp
  8. fish roe
  9. brains
  10. heart kidneys
  11. liver
  12. sweetbreads
  13. broth
  14. gravy
  15. consomme
  16. meat extracts
  17. mincemeat
  18. goose
  19. partridge
  20. yeast and yeast extracts

And alcohol needs to be avoided, particularly beer which contains brewer’s yeast.

This is just a snapshot of some very high purine foods, but there are other foods that are high, moderately high, and relatively low in purines. The extent to which you avoid some foods completely, other foods that you take sparingly and others that are safe to consume will depend on your understanding of the different purine content in them. This is beyond the scope of this short post. But a more detailed listing can be found in The Gout Remedy Report

A word of caution here: Don’t change your diet too drastically overnight. A too rapid change in diet can actually cause an increase in uric acid in the blood, so make the change gradually.
