First you need to understand what causes Gout so that you can avoid Gout as well as treat Gout.

The cycle of Gout begins with the presence of a substance called Purine, which is formed during the normal decomposition of protein molecules in our cells. A by-product of Purine is a crystalline substance called Uric Acid.

The most abundant home remedy to prevent Gout on the planet is at our fingertips. Water! There is no cheaper alternative to treat Gout. An individual seeking to prevent Gout or curing Gout it would be wise to drink as much as 96 ounces of water per day to maintain hydration and dilution of Uric Acid crystals in the bloodstream.

Sweetened Drinks

Americans are drinking more sugary soft drinks than ever, but is there a coincidental rise in occurrence of Gout as well?

During one 12-year study, it was concluded that the risk for developing Gout was significantly increased in participants that drank at least six servings of sweetened carbonated soft drinks per week (these were non-diet sodas).

But it goes further. Sugary fruits and juices such as apples and oranges appear to carry an increased risk of Gout as well. For the person trying to avoid Gout flare-ups, the ill effects of sweetened soft drinks proved to be worse than hard liquor and almost as negative as beer. Fructose appears to be the culprit, having been found to raise Uric Acid levels.

To treat and prevent Gout effectively, switch to water, low sugar juices or diet sodas and drink plenty of them.

Alcohol

News flash: Drinking alcohol increases the risk for Gout!

There is a proven and direct association between alcohol consumption and the presence of Gout. Therefore, if you are an avid drinker, there’s no way you can avoid Gout. The risk is greatest for beer drinkers followed by those indulging in liquor, but wine (in moderation) does not seem to have much of an effect on the incidence of Gout.

Beer carries the most risk, not only contains alcohol, which can cause dehydration, but it contains Purine as well. As discussed earlier, the higher amounts of Purine roaming in the body, the more Uric Acid will answer the call. And it is the Uric Acid crystals that cause the excruciating pain associated with Gout!

Here, I’m going to talk about a home remedy for gout that many sufferers have found to be one of the most effective…

Gout Cures – Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) and Gout

Yes, it’s true, who would have thought that something you see in the supermarket could be so beneficial in beating your gout?

Except that, it usually can’t be bought in the supermarket, because it has to be raw, unpasteurized, un-distilled apple cider vinegar. And it’s been my experience that you can normally only get this in your health food-store or other specialist outlet.

You see, in the old days before pasteurizing and distilling etc., apple cider vinegar (ACV) had been used to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions, and many of them really effectively. And gout is one of those.

Apple cider vinegar as a drink works — it is thought — by changing your blood pH which in turn helps to alleviate the high uric acid conditions in your body which lead to gout.

But many folks use it also as a topical home remedy for gout by soaking the affected area in a mixture of cider and water in order to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

As a drink, all you need do is add 2 to 3 teaspoons of vinegar to a large glass of water and stir well. Then drink a glass 3 times a day. To help the taste a bit you can add some honey to the mixture.

As a topical application, mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar into 3 cups of hot water (not scalding of course) and soak the affected area (e.g. the foot) for around 30 minutes. Repeat as required, reheating the mixture as you go along.

As I said at the beginning, apple cider vinegar is a very popular home remedy for gout. But is it a gout cure? I have to say, not in my experience. As one of a number of natural remedies for gout, it certainly can help during a gout attack. But as a cure? No.

You see, there are many underlying issues that need to be considered, and properly addressed, if you are to cure your gout and prevent it from ever coming back.

And this is very important, since recurring gout can eventually cause you to have kidney problems and permanent joint damage. Also, a person who suffers just one gout attack is now very much more likely to have many more.

It cannot ‘cure’ gout, but it can certainly help to reduce the symptoms of gout. When drunk, it is believed to alter your blood pH so lower your uric acid levels. And, applied externally to the affected joint, it can help to alleviate the pain and inflammation there.

Let’s start with the drink…

Add 3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into a large glass of water and mix thoroughly. Drink a glass at least twice a day. I personally drink three glasses a day. If the taste is too much for you, you can add some honey or fruit juice to help it along.

Now for the topical remedy…

Use a ratio of half of a cup of vinegar to three cups of hot water and soak your foot for about 30 minutes. Repeat as you like, reheating the mixture as you go.

As for the type of apple cider vinegar you use, it must be the raw, un-distilled, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar you would get from a health food store or other specialist store. It normally has a good deal of sediment in the bottom of the bottle; called the ‘mother.’ 

 But as I said at the start, apple cider vinegar cannot cure the gout in your foot on it’s own. You need to investigate and address a whole range of issues, as well as other natural home remedies, to be able to successfully manage your gout and prevent recurring attacks.

This is important because recurring gout can cause you to eventually have permanent joint damage as well as possible kidney problems, such as painful kidney stones. But it shouldn’t be surprising, apple cider vinegar has been used for thousands of years as a home remedy for many ailments. Hippocrates himself used to use it, mixed with honey, for coughs and overall general well-being. Since then it has been used to treat such things as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma and acne and, of course, as a gout cure.

Apple cider vinegar works, when ingested, by altering your blood pH to help lower your high uric acid levels. Bear in mind that high uric acid leads to the formation of gout crystals in your joints.

Just add 2 teaspoons of the vinegar to 8 ounces of water and mix well. Now, some people say to drink this once a day, others twice a day and even three times a day. I myself tend to go for the three times a day lobby. 

As a topical application, it probably works more by the fact that you are actually soaking your affected joint in hot water, rather than anything the vinegar is doing, but I admit I’m not sure.

Just add half a cup of cider to three cups of  hot water and soak the affected area for 30 minutes. Reheat as required and repeat the process as necessary.

Now for the apple cider vinegar itself. It has to be the raw, un-distilled, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar you normally get in health food stores or other specialist natural health stores. It should have what they call the ‘mother’ at the bottom, which is the sediment. Ask for assistance to be sure. 

Apple cider vinegar is just one of many natural gout remedies available to you. There are others such as cherries and cherry juice, celery seeds and celery seed extract, herbal remedies, gout diet, etc.

The thing is that not all home remedies work for everybody. You need to identify what there is out there and through trial and error discover what works best for you.

First though, although the title of this post is All Natural Cures For Gout – 7 Herbs To Cure Gout, I should point out that an actual ‘cure’ for gout doesn’t yet exist. However, the condition is absolutely ‘controlable’. And this is what both modern medicine, and natural remedies for gout, are able to do.

So I use the term ‘natural cures for gout’ in the sense that, by taking the right steps, you can get rid of the symptoms of gout, and, help prevent further gout attacks.

The key is to get rid of the symptoms of gout and, at the same time, prevent it returning. And you want to prevent recurring gout because, apart from the great pain and inconvenience, frequent gout attacks can leave you with permanently damaged joints and even kidney problems.

So, when considering herbs as natural home remedies for gout, you have to consider reducing the pain and inflammation, plus, reducing your uric acid levels to prevent future attacks.

Here, I list seven natural herbs that you can use to help eliminate the symptoms of gout, plus, help to prevent recurring gout attacks…

7 Simple Herbs to Cure Gout  

Bilberries: these have anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce the pain of gout symptoms.

Celery seeds: also have anti-inflammatory properties for inflammation and pain reduction.

Hawthorn: has anti-inflammatory properties too.
