It is particularly indicated where the patient already has urate crystal deposition, including the presence of tophus. It is only available on prescription.

In the United States and Canada, febuxostat is branded as Uloric, Adenuric in the European Union (EU) and Feburic in Asia.

How Does Febuxostat Work?

Uric acid is naturally formed through the breakdown of purines in the body which normally expels excess acid via urine with a little through the stools. However, excess uric acid can be retained in the bloodstream when the body produces more acid than it can eliminate. High uric acid levels can eventually lead to the deposition of crystals of urate in the joints and surrounding tissue, causing the excruciating symptoms of gout.

Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme in the body that helps to convert purines into uric acid. Febuxostat can inhibit this activity and so can help to reduce the amount of uric acid produced.

What to Tell Your Doctor Before Taking Febuxostat

You should tell your doctor if you…

are pregnant

are breastfeeding

are allergic to febuxostat or any of the ingredients in the tablets

have or have had heart problems

have thyroid problems

are taking any other medications

How to Take Febuxostat

Your doctor will tell you how to take it. He or she will decide on the dose applicable to your condition. This is usually a 40 mg, 80 mg or a 120 mg tablet taken once per day with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Take the tablets exactly as your doctor prescribes. If you miss a dose do not double-up on the next dose. And do not stop taking the tablets unless your doctor tells you to.

Note that, after starting on a course, you may suffer one or more gout attacks. Do not stop taking the tablets. This happens naturally as uric acid is removed from the joints and tissue because of the action of the drug. Your doctor may prescribe NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to help relieve the painful symptoms.

Febuxostat Side Effects

As with any drug there are possible negative side effects with the taking of febuxostat. But not everyone will suffer these side effects. In fact, most patients will tolerate it quite well. And where they do appear, they are usually fairly minor and either don’t need any treatment, or, only require some simple treatment by your physician.

Common side effects are:- headache, nausea, unexplained rash, diarrhea, liver function test abnormalities.

Uncommon are:- dizziness, fatigue, oedema, altered sense of taste, increase in blood amylase, decrease in platelet count, increase in blood creatinine, and arthralgia.

Rare side effects:- insomnia, nervousness, renal insufficiency, asthenia.

There are some rare, but serious, side effects that you should report urgently to your health-care provider. These are things such as:-

chest pain

difficulty breathing

easy bruising or bleeding

wheezing

swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, etc.

unexplained rash

itching

hives

frequent / persistent infections

numbness in arms, legs, face

liver problems (yellowing of the whites of the eyes, dark colored urine)

Note that the lists of side effects given above are not complete. For a more detailed list of possible febuxostat side effects please speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Related Gout Articles:

No Related Gout Articles

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

Natural Home Remedies to Reduce Uric Acid in the Body

Nature’s Top 4 Gout Remedies

Pictures of Gout In Feet: How to Get Rid of Gout in Feet

Hyperuricemia Symptoms & Treatment Guidelines

Common Foods that Should Be Avoided by Gout Patients

Indomethacin Gout Medication – Is Indocin Right For You?

The Use of Cherry Extract in Gout Treatment

Get Fast Gout Relief Today

Indomethacin Gout Medication – Is Indocin Right For You?

Gout Medication

indomethacin

indomethacin dosage

indomethacin drug

indomethacin gout

indomethacin side effects

What is Indomethacin Gout Medication? It is a drug in the group called “non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs” (NSAIDs) and is widely used to reduce swelling, fever, stiffness, inflammation and pain, caused by arthritis, gout, bursitis, tendinitis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

It is probably the most commonly used drug-based medication to relieve gout symptoms. Brand names are Indocin and Indocin-SR. Indomethacin is available in capsule, slow-release capsule, oral suspension and suppository forms.

How Does Indomethacin Reduce Gout Symptoms?

Indomethacin works by helping to block or inhibit the production of prostaglandin molecules that are naturally produced by our bodies’cells when body tissue is damaged. This damage occurs in gout victims due to the presence of urate crystals in the joints and surrounding tissue.

White blood cells flood the damaged site in order to limit and help repair the damage. Prostaglandins are produced during this process resulting in pain, inflammation, swelling, stiffness, etc. This is the body’s natural inflammatory process. By inhibiting prostaglandins production, Indomethacin helps to reduce these symptoms.

Dosage

Capsules come in 25 mg and 50 mg. Sustained release capsules in 75 mg. Oral suspension 25 mg / ml, and suppositories 50 mg.

The recommended dose for adults is 50 to 200 mg per day. Never increase or decrease the dose or use it for less or longer than prescribed unless your doctor has told you to. Never go over the total daily dosage. And do not lie down for up to 30 minutes after taking a dose.

Your doctor will advise on the actual preparation and dosage depending on your particular case. He / she will normally start you at the lowest possible dosage for your case and over the shortest possible timescale in order to reduce the risk of side effects such as bleeding (see below). Take the medication with a meal or directly after a meal to help protect your stomach. Some doctors often prescribe certain drugs or antacids to help with this too.

What Are the Side Effects of Indomethacin?

The most common side effects are:-

upset stomach

diarrhea

nausea

vomiting

drowsiness

tiredness

heartburn

headache

dizziness

In the event that you get any of these side effects and they get worse, or even if they just persist, you should contact your physician.

Indomethacin also has some more serious side effects that you should be aware of. Contact your doctor if you suffer any of the following:-

unexplained / sudden weight gain

swelling of hands or feet

mood swings

difficulty swallowing

unexplained hearing changes (e.g. tinnitus)

Indomethacin can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke as well as other circulatory problems. And it can also cause bleeding and even perforation of the stomach and intestines. So that if you suffer any of the following symptoms you must stop taking the medication and seek urgent medical attention:-

stiff neck

shortness of breath / trouble breathing

chest pain

slurred speech

weakness in any part of the body

extreme tiredness

vision problems

balance problems

change in urination flow

dark colored urine

yellowing of the skin

yellow eyes

blood in stools

severe stomach pain

rash

itching

swelling of the lips / mouth / tongue / throat

The lists of possible side effects above are not complete. So if you suffer from any other side effects that are not listed here, you must contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. For more serious issues seek urgent medical help.

Who Should Use / Not Use Indomethacin for Gout?

At all times you should seek your physician’s advice before taking any medication, and be guided by them. Your doctor will make a professional assessment of your suitability for Indomethacin before prescribing it for gout. However, before that, you should ensure that you tell your doctor if you:-

are allergic to Indomethacin, aspirin, other NSAIDs (e.g. Iboprufen, Naproxen, etc.)

have other allergies

are taking any other drugs

are taking herbal products, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, etc.

are pregnant

are planning to become pregnant

are breastfeeding

Also, if you have or have had:-

heart or circulatory problems

stroke

stomach ulcers / bleeding

high blood pressure

blood clot

asthma

epilepsy

liver or kidney disease

nasal polyps

You should not use Indomethacin if you are allergic to it or aspirin or other NSAIDs. You should not use it directly before or after heart bypass surgery. You physician will weigh-up the benefits against the possible side effects and decide whether or not Indomethacin (Indocin) is right for your particular case.

Related Gout Articles:

No Related Gout Articles

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

How to Get Rid of Gout Pain in 3 Easy Steps

Febuxostat for Gout – Uloric, Adenuric and Feburic Tablets for Hyperuricemia

High Uric Acid in Urine – What Does It Mean?

Colchicine for Gout: How Safe is Colchicine in the Treatment of Gout?

Stop Gout Fast With Baking Soda

Uric Acid Therapy to Get Rid of Gout

How to Get Rid of Uric Acid Symptoms Fast

Pictures of Gout In Feet: How to Get Rid of Gout in Feet

Can Apple Cider Vinegar Cure Gout In The Foot?

Hyperuricemia Symptoms & Treatment Guidelines

Common Foods that Should Be Avoided by Gout Patients

Colchicine for Gout: How Safe is Colchicine in the Treatment of Gout?

Gout Medication

colchicine

colchicine dosage for gout

colchicine for gout

colchicine gout treatment

What is Colchicine? It is derived from the seeds of the autumn crocus plant, also known as meadow saffron. The plant’s use in the treatment of rheumatism and inflammation was recorded in Egypt as far back as 1500 BC.

As a drug, colchicine was first isolated in 1820 by two French chemists, Pelletier and Caventon. And in 2009 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave approval for its use as a standalone drug in the treatment of gout in the United States. Before 1982 it had only been approved in combination with probenecid. Colchicine can only be obtained on prescription.

Why Colchicine And Not NSAIDs?

Nowadays, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are usually the first choice medicines to relieve the pain and inflammation of gout. They are available over-the-counter as well as on prescription. And for very many people they can be very effective. However, there are some people who cannot take them, or at the very least should get clearance from their doctor before taking them. For example people having:-

known kidney or liver disease

known allergies to certain medications

stomach ulcers

hypertension (high blood pressure)

being pregnant

certain heart conditions

diabetes

asthma

In the cases where NSAIDs are inappropriate then colchicine is often prescribed. And, of course, there may be situations where the gout attack is so severe that NSAIDs prove to be ineffective for those who are clear to take them. Where this is the case then colchicine may be prescribed.

Who Should Not Take Colchicine

Clearly, you should not take colchicine if you’re allergic to it. But you must also inform your doctor if you suffer from any of the following:-

kidney disease

liver disease

heart disease

intestinal disorder or bleeding

stomach ulcer

Crohn’s disease

ulcerative colitis

Also, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, you intend to become pregnant during a proposed course of colchicine, or if you are breastfeeding. In addition to these issues there are certain drugs which can increase the toxicity of colchicine (see Dosage and Toxicity below). Your doctor will then make a determination of the most appropriate treatment in your case.

How Does Colchicine Work?

Colchicine does not reduce the actual uric acid levels present in the blood. There are other drugs that are prescribed for this, such as probenecid and allopurinol. However, because a sudden change in uric acid levels can actually cause a gout attack or increase the severity of existing symptoms, colchicine may sometimes be prescribed at the same time as uric acid-reducing drugs.

Its main use is in treating the inflammation, swelling and associated pain of acute gout attacks and in the short-term prevention of gout. It does this by inhibiting the build-up of white blood cells in the areas of the body where uric acid crystals have formed. To protect the area, your body’s own defence mechanism tries to swamp the crystals with white blood cells and pro-inflammatory enzymes and lactic acid are produced as a result. It’s these that give rise to the inflammation, swelling and pain of gout. So by inhibiting this process you can reduce the pain, inflammation and swelling of a gout attack.

Colchicine Side Effects

As with any drug there are side effects. However, one has to weigh-up the severity of the pain and disability of the actual gout attack against the severity of the side effects. Common side effects are:-

nausea

vomiting

diarrhea

bleeding in stomach

rash

anemia

muscle weakness

abdominal pain

less urination than normal or not urinating at all

For a fuller list you need to talk to the pharmacist and carefully read the documentation that comes with the medicine. But please bear in mind that not everyone will suffer all of these. Some folks won’t suffer any. Others will suffer one or two maybe. Some may suffer more. Not only that, their severity will vary across individuals who have them.

That being said, if you experience any of the following when taking colchicine then call your doctor right away:-

abdominal pain

diarrhea

unusual fatigue

tingling in fingers or toes

flu symptoms

bleeding or bruising which is unusual or unexplained

blood in stools

bleeding from anus

blood in urine

And, if you have any of the following you need to contact emergency services at once, as these could be the signs of very serious complications:-

fever

hives (red, itchy red welts on the skin)

burning in the mouth and throat

swelling on the face, neck, tongue, throat, lips

Colchicine Dosage and Toxicity

As you’ve now seen above, colchicine is a very toxic drug which, if taken in too high doses, can cause serious complications, such as multiple organ failure and even death. So it is very important to follow the prescribed dosage very, very carefully. Generally speaking, this is between 2 and 4 tablets per day for most people. Tablets come in either 0.5mg and 0.6mg doses depending on which country you live in.

In addition, there are some drugs that may increase the toxicity of colchicine when taken at the same time. These are drugs such as:-

immunosuppressants

statins

antibiotics

anti-fungals

antiretrovirals

antiarrhythmics

and even grapefruit juice!

So, you need to tell your doctor which medicines, etc., you are taking if they are considering prescribing colchicine for your gout.

On a final note; do not buy colchicine online or from any other source which is not approved by your country’s drug administration, e.g. the FDA in the United States. However, the medicine does not reduce the levels of uric acid in the blood stream.

Most often the pain usually goes away in about twelve hours of starting the treatment for gout, and is completely relieved by 48 hours. Taking a gout medicine such as allopurinol, can help to prevent future attacks, by helping to reduce uric acid levels in the blood. However, it needs to be taken on a long term basis to be effective.

And medicine for gout treatment can become tedious to execute, since gout can be caused by many other medical conditions, such as diabetes.

Gout is a disease caused by high levels of uric acid in joints. When this acid builds up in the blood, it becomes crystallized and gets stored in and around different joints in the body, inflaming them and making them red, hot, and tender to touch.

Although joint inflammation is the most common symptom of gout, kidney and urinary problems can result as well.

Symptoms of gout include intense pain, redness and swelling of the infected joint. When this flares up in the big toe — the most common place for gout — a patient may think that he or she has broken their toe. The suspicion of a broken toe leads to them making a doctor’s appointment, where the doctor quickly determines the real cause of the pain and prescribes drug-based medicine for gout pain.

Natural Medicine for Gout Treatment

Because of the nasty side effects that gout medicine can have, and that the medicine doesn’t really address the root causes of gout, more and more folks are using natural remedies to treat their gout…

Avoiding foods with high purine content can help in treating gout. Increased intake of water dilutes the uric acid in blood. It can provide much relief to those suffering from gout.

Increasing the muscle strength by daily exercise improves the bodys immune response. Keeping your body healthy and fit is one of the best natural way of treating gout and other diseases.

Chinese physicians have used mulberries to treat gout for centuries. The bioflavonoids in mulberries help remove uric acid from the blood stream and reduce the production of Urate crystals.

One excellent supplement to help lower the impact of purine rich foods is Goutezol. The ingredients in Goutezol boost a persons immune system as well. Not only does this mulberry derived supplement defend against gout by blocking the absorption of purine, it lowers your risk of catching other illnesses as well.

Learn more about Gout Diets. But many standard gout prescription drugs have serious side effects.

Some drugs soothe the pain and swelling, but destroy the lining of your stomach. A second medicine for acute gout causes diarrhea, vomitng and nausea. And one more medicine for eliminating hyperuricemia can in fact cause a gout attack!

NSAIDs reduce gout pain by relieving the stress put on your affected joints due to inflammation. On the other hand they are regarded as very harmful to the stomach. Some medical professionals have been known to claim that harm to the stomach lining should be regarded as an effect of the drug, instead of a side-effect. A lot of sufferers are given other drugs, for example Omepazole, in order to minimize the possibility of damage caused by NSAIDs.

Colchicine is another common medicine prescribed for acute gouty arthritis. However this medication is extremely likely to induce nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The correct dose is sometimes established by finding the point at which it induces nausea, diarrhea or vomiting, and subsequently lowering the dosage. Being nauseous and having gout together has to be awful. Picture having to rush to the bathroom while battling gout in your legs!

Allopurinol is prescribed by doctors to help alleviate problems with hyperuricemia. It works by inhibiting an enzyme which is required to produce uric acid. It is high levels of uric acid that causes it to form crystals, collect in the joints, and set off gout pain. But the fact is that when you first start on allopurinol there is a danger that it may actually set off a gout pain episode. There is also a risk of suffering from a terrible skin reaction. Physicians will often advise that after you start using this medication you will be using it for the remainder of your life.

Staying on prescription drugs for a very long time is something that will not appeal to many folks. There are absolutely natural methods to minimize the chances of suffering gout symptoms, for instance eating certain foods, and steering clear of a number of gout-inducing foods. Additionally there are many natural home remedies to cure gout which are effective in treating your gout symptoms.

Please go now to The Gout Remedy Report.

Related Gout Articles:

<a href='http://www.thegoutsite.com/hyperuricemia-2/hyperuricemia-symptoms-treatment-guidelines' title='Hyperuricemia Symptoms & On the other hand they are known to be very destructive to the stomach. Some specialists have been known to claim that injury to the lining of the stomach really should be viewed as an effect of NSAIDs, rather than a side-effect. A lot of sufferers are encouraged to take extra medicines, such as Omepazole, in order to restrict the possibility of havoc attributable to NSAIDs.

Colchicine is a second well-known prescription drug for acute gouty arthritis. However this medication is very likely to cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The proper dosage is often established by finding the point at which it causes vomiting, and then lowering the amount. Having nausea and gout all at once has got to be dreadful. Visualize having to dash to the toilet while struggling with gout pain in your toes!

Allopurinol is taken to help prevent hyperuricemia. It operates by suppressing an enzyme which is required to generate monosodium urate. It is high concentration of uric acid that causes it to form crystals, collect in the joints, and set off gout symptoms. But did you realize that when you initially start allopurinol there is a possibility that it could actually bring on a gout episode. There is a risk of suffering from a bad skin reaction. Medical professionals will usually recommend that once you start using this medication you will be using it for all time.

Staying on medications for so long really does not appeal to a whole lot of folks. There are totally natural ways to lower the chances of suffering gout pain, including eating particular foods, and avoiding a number of gout-causing foods. Also there are many home remedies to cure gout that are effective in treating your gout pain.

Please now go to the Gout Remedy Report and discover the 2 hour natural gout relief program.

Related Gout Articles:

Uric Acid Therapy to Get Rid of Gout

How Liquid Intake Causes / Affects / Helps Cure Gout?

Gout In The Knee Is Very Painful

100% Natural Remedies For Gout

Basic Information on Gout – What Gout is and How to Treat It

Benefits of Combining Gout Treatments and Diet For a Dramatic Reduction of Gout Symptoms

Gout, What Do You Know About It?

How To Dissolve Gout Crystals Naturally And Cure Your Gout Attack Fast

Gout Therapies From Your Physician

What is a Gout Attack? – Gout Attack Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

How To Dissolve Gout Crystals Naturally And Cure Your Gout Attack Fast

What is a Gout Attack? – Gout Attack Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

About Me

Uric Acid Symptoms – 5 Simple Tips to Ditch Your Uric Acid Symptoms of Gout

Gout In The Knee Is Very Painful

High Uric Acid Foods to Avoid If You Have Gout

What to Eat to Get Rid of Gout

How To Beat Gout – 3 Natural Tips To Get Rid Of Gout Fast

The Gout Remedy Report Review

Swollen Joints? These are:-

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Colchicines

Corticosteroids

Allopurinol

NSAIDs

These are non-steroidal drugs used to reduce inflammation and help relieve pain. They cannot reduce uric acid levels, so are only of use during an attack; not to prevent further attacks.

They can be effective, but, they can also have some negative side effects. These are things such as stomach pain, bleeding and stomach ulcers over time.

Colchicines

These are very strong anti-inflammatory drugs to be used during an attack. They can work quickly enough if taken within 12 hours of the onset of a gout attack.

They also have some pretty nasty side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory steroid hormones that can be taken orally or by injection directly into the affected joint during an attack.

They work by acting on the immune system to block the triggering of anti-inflammatory actions.

These also work quickly and can eliminate all symptoms within a week or so.

Unfortunately, because of the way they act on the immune system, a serious side effect is that the ability of the body to battle infections and heal open wounds etc. is compromised.

Allopurinol

This medication is used to manage gout and does this pretty effectively. It cannot, however, affect the symptoms of a gout attack.

It is solely used to lower and maintain uric acid at relatively low levels to prevent gout attacks from re-occurring. It works by blocking the enzyme process that produces uric acid from purines in our cells.

It is a long term drug because it only works for as long as it is being taken. Once stopped uric acid levels can rise again. Which is why it is taken long term (months to years) by chronic gout sufferers.

It has side effects like diarrhea, nausea and skin rashes.

These are just very short summaries of typical gout medication prescribed by doctors. It is very important that you follow your doctor’s advice very closely. And never, ever, stop any gout medication without first consulting your doctor.

Related Gout Articles:

Gout Treatment Do’s and Don’ts

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

Pictures of Gout In Feet: How to Get Rid of Gout in Feet

5 Natural Supplements for Gout Sufferers

Gout In The Knee Is Very Painful

Gout Diets – Shocking Gout Diet Foods To Avoid

What to Eat to Get Rid of Gout

How to Get Rid of Gout Pain in 3 Easy Steps

Gout Treatment Do’s and Don’ts
