Here, you can see the typical pictures of gout in the foot, or in this case, pictures of gout in two feet! Notice how swollen the left foot in particular is, the inflammation, and redness. What you can’t ‘see’, but if you’re a gout sufferer can appreciate, is the stiffness and agonizing pain that comes with such gout attacks.

These symptoms of gout are caused by needle-sharp uric acid crystals that have been deposited in the joints and surrounding tissue. The excruciating pain is as a direct result of your body’s reaction to these ‘foreign’ bodies in your joints and tissues. 

The uric acid crystals are formed out of excess uric acid that your kidneys have been unable to excrete from your body as they normally do.

This is usually due to either (1) your kidneys being unable to process normal uric acid levels efficiently, or, (2) there is too much uric acid being produced in your body for your kidneys to handle. There may be a third option, which is (1) and (2) acting together.

Uric acid is actually a byproduct of the breakdown of chemical compounds in our bodies and foodstuffs, called ‘purines’. And relatively low levels of uric acid are in fact beneficial since they act as an antioxidant.

Nevertheless, when there are high levels of uric acid in your bloodstream, this is bad, because they can form uric acid crystals in your joints, which leads to gout as described above.  

The key therefore is to lower uric acid levels and maintain them at these healthier levels. You can do this through the use of drug-based medications, or, by using natural home remedies for gout.

Drugs can be effective but they have several drawbacks such as some nasty side effects, and, they only work as long as you take them, so that they are a long term solution. Once you cease taking them, your gout can come back again. This is why it’s vital NEVER to stop taking prescribed drugs until your doctor advises you to do so.
