How Can I Get Rid of Purines in My System?
Since gout is caused by high uric acid in the blood that leads to urate crystals in your joints, and, uric acid is produced by the breakdown of purines in your body, you need to reduce the amount of purines in your system.
Purines exist in your food, as well as your body’s cell structure, so you need to focus on lowering your purine intake through food. This means avoiding those foods that are highest in purines, and, eating more of the foods that have relatively low purine concentrations.
Here are some high purine foods to avoid:-
Anchovies, bouillon, brains, broth, consomme, dried legumes, goose, gravy, heart, herring, kidneys, liver, mackerel, meat extracts, mincemeat, mussels, partridge, roe, sardines, scallops, shrimp, sweetbreads, yeast (baker and brewer), yeast extracts. Avoid alcohol, especially beer.
Here are relatively low purine foods you can eat:-
Essential fatty acids (e.g. flax-seed, nuts, seeds, tuna, etc.), low fat dairy produce, complex carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits, cereals, rice, pasta, breads, etc.), high vitamin C foods (e.g. potatoes, red bell peppers, red cabbage, oranges, tangerines, mandarins, etc.), green leafy vegetables (e.g. kale, cabbage, parsley, etc. (but not cauliflower, asparagus, spinach)), fruit. Drink at least 12 x 8oz glasses of water everyday.
The above diet can help you get rid of purines in your system. This in turn should help to reduce your uric acid levels and help prevent future gout attacks. This is important, because frequently recurring gout attacks can lead to permanently damaged joints and kidney problems down the line.
