Treating Gout With Baking Soda Can Work Fast
One of the most effective ways to treat the symptoms of a gout attack is to use baking soda (bicarbonate of soda). When I was having my attacks I found this to be probably the most effective, although it has to be said I was also eating lots of cherries and drinking lots of water as well.
Baking soda has the ability to help dissolve uric acid crystals. It can also help to make the uric acid in your blood more soluble so that it’s easier for your body to process and flush out excess acid. And because you take the baking soda soluble in lots of water, you are helping to raise your body fluid volumes which also helps your kidneys to flush out uric acid more effectively.
Other benefits of bicarbonate of soda is that it helps boost your urine pH which can help reduce your risk of painful kidney stones due to repeat, long term recurring gout attacks. Plus, if you are taking the usual NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), it can help to improve their power too.
To treat your gout attack with this remedy, you need to add 1/2 a teaspoon to 8oz of water and stir until the baking soda crystals / powder have dissolved completely. Then drink 1 glass before bed, 1 when you get up in the morning, and 1 glass every 2 to 4 hours during the day. Repeat each day until your symptoms have gone.
Watch that you don’t take more than 4 teaspoons per 24 hour period. Also, change over to a salt-free diet during the treatment because baking soda is very high in sodium. And if you suffer from high blood pressure, then you must go and speak to your doctor before treating your gout this way. In fact, even if you don’t suffer from hypertension, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor anyway.
As I’ve said above, I had found this to be very effective and fast. Although I hadn’t experienced the 2 hour relief that some people have; but each person’s case is unique.
If your doctor has given you the go ahead to use this home remedy, you might also want to incorporate the cherry remedy I spoke about at the beginning. They have natural anti-inflammatory properties and can also reduce uric acid in your blood. 30 to 40 cherries every 4 hours during an attack.
Now, of course, baking soda is only for gout attacks, not for preventing gout, because you clearly can’t take this treatment over too long a period. It’s strictly a short term measure to eliminate your gout symptoms. But actual gout prevention is extremely important in reducing the risks of long term damage to your joints and other problems, such as painful kidney stones.
For prevention you need to take a serious look at things like your diet, weight, lifestyle, etc., all things that can have a major say in your propensity to have gout attacks. And once you have one attack, your chances of having more are greatly increased.
